WORLD ENGLISH DICTIONARY:
okta or octa (ˈɒktə)
—n
a unit used in meteorology to measure cloud cover, equivalent to a cloud cover of one eighth of the sky
[C20: from Greek okta-, oktō eight]
Okta was founded to help companies unlock the business value of their cloud computing investments.
As companies make the transition to the cloud, IT organizations need to fundamentally rethink how they secure, scale, manage, and optimize their software as a service and cloud based applications. IT needs a service to help them more effectively “cover” these new cloud investments. Okta is that service.
The Okta name was a very deliberate choice and our vision is to provide the fundamental set of on-demand services enterprises need as they make this transition, and the set of on-demand services that will cover their Cloud Services Networks.
The Okta service itself was designed from the ground up to be a 100% multi-tenant, on-demand service that securely scales as easily as the cloud services that it is helping enterprises cover. Also like those services, Okta delivers enterprise level functionality with a very intuitive user experience – for both administrators and end-users.
Okta is a meteorological scale that is a measure of cloud coverage. A clear sky scores zero on the Okta scale, and a completely cloudy sky equates to eight Okta.
Today, the management of cloud based applications is still in its infancy and thus it is more difficult to fully cover a Cloud Services Network and manage it with the same fidelity that is possible when managing a Local Area Network. While some SaaS application vendors have invested heavily to improve their manageability and expose relevant integration points via published APIs, today that is not the norm.
Okta is both filling that gap by integrating across the spectrum of standard and proprietary interfaces that exist to offer end-users the best management experience possible and also partnering with the SaaS ISV community to improve our ability to jointly offer our customers a fully “covered” cloud computing experience.
