Position Description

Okta is seeking a highly technical and experienced architect to join its Core Infrastructure Development group. Okta has rapidly grown in scale and size. To support this growth, the Cleavers team has been fearlessly cleaving large parts of code for better modularization. The goal of this team is to introduce more nimbleness and independence in the code and enable faster development, and faster startup times. The longer term goals are to break up Okta’s service into smaller more independent units and move towards micro-services (or macro-services) using our core codebase.

As an architect, you will be a big-picture thinker and an in-depth problem solver.  You will recognize problems before they become problems and lead a group of engineers to proactively address them. You lead from the front to scale our code and systems for operational excellence. You are a respected team lead and a trusted advisor who gets a seat at the table with the Chief Architects to shape our long term strategies.

Job Duties and Responsibilities

  • Help drive the long-term vision and strategy of our code structure and microservices
  • Align with long-term and short-term goals to evolve our code, technology and tools
  • Move mountains of code i.e. be a code slinger with careful thought to quality and due diligence in order to avoid regressions

 

  • Work with Chief Architects, Eng management and rest of the team to scope and plan engineering efforts
  • Provide technical guidance and influence in other areas of the Engineering Organization (e.g. DevOps, Test Engineering, Security)
  • Keep abreast of and introduce at Okta, broader technical trends from the industry
  • Interface with rest of the Eng team leads and architects, QA and TechOps

Required Knowledge, Skills, And Abilities

  • 12 to 15+ years experience working in development roles in software engineering
  • Deep knowledge and code development skills in the context of refactoring, code reorganization or scaling services
  • Hands-on software development skills
  • Experience working in Agile software development teams leveraging continuous integration and deployment practices.
  • Solid grasp of software engineering principles and practices
  • Understanding and appreciation for TDD

Additional Desirable Knowledge, Skills, And Abilities

  • Experience building large-scale enterprise software or SaaS products
  • Expertise in Java, Spring, ArchUnit, Tomcat, Maven, MySQL, AWS
  • Desirable to have experience with gRPC, Envoy, Consul, networking in the context of Microservices
  • Experience working on low latency, highly scalable and mission critical environments

Education and Training

  • B.S. Computer Science or related field (MS/PhD preferred)
