Software Architect, OktaX

The Role

We are looking for a Lead Software Architect to lead OktaX’s in-house engineering function. OktaX’s model brings together high-impact founders-in-residence, a wealth of startup leadership experience, and our in-house engineering, design and product leads, to project the future, experiment with what is becoming possible, and collaborative build and validate early slices of product targeting emerging and future market opportunities. 

The ideal candidate for this role is a prolific and creative full-stack developer and systems architect with an exceptional track record of building hard and interesting things. This person should be expert at their craft and fearless at picking up and mastering new technologies, a pragmatic and fast builder and experimenter, creative and collaborative, and have superb architectural and system design judgement.

Job Duties and Responsibilities

  • As one of the EPD (engineering, product, design) leads within OktaX, work collaboratively across the team and with multiple founders-in-residence (both technologist and entrepreneurial executive) to experiment and build an evolving set of prototypes and slices of early product. 
  • Be a fountain of code – a prolific creator and an enthusiastic collaborator. Build clean pragmatic code and lay a lightweight but strong architectural foundation.
  • Partner with founders-in-residence on focused concept-validation efforts, building out key functionality to test ideas, refine their product vision, and obtain customer/user feedback.
  • Establish and continuously evolve OktaX engineering best practices to help new companies-in-residence benefit from shared learnings and move more quickly. 
  • Provide architectural and modern development practices leadership and mentoring to other engineers within OktaX, and within the Okta engineering community
  • Participate in team backcasting (i.e. future mapping) exercises, and experiment and perform research and diligence on frontier tech topics, trends and companies.
  • Interview engineering candidates for OktaX companies-in-residence, ensuring a consistently high quality and cultural bar for all candidates.


Minimum REQUIRED Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • 10+ years of hands-on software development, with an extensive grasp of modern software languages, engineering principles and practices, and architectural best practices
  • Expert at full-stack development, with extensive experience in modern backend (e.g. AWS/GCP/Azure services, containers, data/persistence layers, event-driven architectures) and frontend (e.g. React, front-end state management, visualization/WebGL, component libraries and reuse) 
  • Fluent in Typescript and adept at moving between modern programming languages  
  • Experienced at collaborating with designers – in particular rapid prototyping and iterative product workflow using Figma (or similar)
  • Some experience with data science and machine learning technologies and techniques is preferred

Education and Training

  • Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in computer science (or equivalent)

((Colorado, New York and Washington only*) Minimum salary of $226,000/year + bonus, commission, or variable comp (depending on role) + equity + benefits)
