The Situation

In the move to the cloud, DocuSign faced common problems. Employees struggled to keep URLs and passwords straight. IT worried about the security risks inherent in employee-managed cloud accounts.

In addition, Dinsdale says, company leaders wanted to “stitch our SaaS products together to have one source of truth.” DocuSign’s company philosophy is “automate everything that can be automated,” says Dinsdale. “It’s a competitive advantage to have better systems, and to be able to have more relevant, timely information to accelerate your business.” Beyond the security and productivity challenges, the lack of a centralized identity management system simply made for a clunky way of doing business.

The Solution

Okta approached DocuSign’s requirements with an “all-in” attitude, says Dinsdale, and the company deployed Okta Single Sign-On in December 2011. Everyone loved having one place to access all their SaaS applications.

Over time, DocuSign brought on more Okta functionality and today, the company has significantly reduced password-reset requests. DocuSign uses two-factor authentication to strengthen security, and Okta Mobile is becoming increasingly important. It goes back to that streamlined way of doing business: “We expect to be connected anywhere we are: on a plane, in a car, or at home,” says Dinsdale. “It has to be seamless.”
