You may have heard of the standards OAuth 2, JSON Web Token (JWT) and Open ID Connect (OIDC). You'll leave this course with a deep knowledge and understanding of these standards and when to use them in the context of Single Sign-On, protecting APIs, and encoding meaningful information into the tokens that get passed around. We'll cover OAuth actors and flows, how JWTs work, and using the OIDC identity framework for both Single Sign-On (SSO) and Social Authentication.

Beginning with an architectural introduction, we will discuss common access scenarios supported by each standard to give you the ability to make the right authentication and authorization decision for your application. You'll use the Okta Identity Cloud platform to implement SSO with OIDC, secure API access with OAuth, and configure Social Authentication to a custom-built B2C loyalty platform through completion of extensive Javascript coding labs. Best practices are covered, as well as testing and troubleshooting techniques.

This course is perfect for Architects and Developers who are familiar with using Okta REST APIs, Widgets, and SDKs to customize B2B identity management scenarios and want to expand their knowledge around B2C use cases.

After taking this course, you will be able to: Take the use of OAuth, OpenID Connect (OIDC), and JSON Web Tokens (JWT) from theory to practice; Develop SSO to a custom application using Okta and OpenID Connect; Securely protect custom REST APIs with Okta API Access Management and OAuth; Understand OAuth actors and flows and when to use them; Implement Social Authentication in your custom application; Use Proof Key for Code Exchange (PKCE) to secure hybrid flows for mobile apps; and, Understand best practices and troubleshoot common problems.

You have successfully migrated your existing users from multiple user stores into Okta by creating new accounts or linking to existing accounts. However, you have not yet determined how Okta will manage your users’ rich profile data to create their unique identities in Okta. You have also found it extremely challenging to synchronize your users’ profiles between multiple user stores, apps, and services as more people join your organization: they change roles over time, manually update their own information, and eventually leave voluntarily or are terminated.

In this course, you will apply advanced techniques to integrate Okta with multi-source mastering. First you will define how the Okta profile attributes are populated with the correct “source of truth” leveraging Universal Directory. Next you will deploy provisioning solutions using Lifecycle Management to potentially manage the entire life cycle (creation, password synchronization, updates, and deactivation) of your Okta users. In this special Oktane edition, we will spend additional time analyzing complex scenarios through real use-cases and interactive discussions led by our specialists in identity governance and lifecycle management.

By the end of this course, you will be able to: Understand and deploy profile mastery; Perform Attribute-Level Mastering; Create rules for incoming Imports; and, Manage the lifecycle for users mastered by a directory and human resource management system.

Tracy Chou is an entrepreneur, software engineer, and diversity advocate. She spent five years at Pinterest as an engineer and tech lead and was an early hire engineer at Quora prior to that. She is a founding member of Project Include and is an investment scout and advisor for a couple of Bay Area VC firms. In her latest venture she is CEO of Block Party, with a mission to solve online harassment and abuse and rethink social platforms.

A not infrequent question that women in tech get is: "What's it like to be a woman in tech?" This is particularly true after some particularly newsworthy story gets some play, like a big harassment case or some new depressing stats getting cycled around. There isn't a single experience of being a woman in the industry, but Tracy will share her story of how she became a software engineer and an activist for diversity in tech, and many themes in her story reflect more broadly across the industry. She will also discuss the work of Project Include, the non-profit she co-founded to address diversity and inclusion in tech, and survey the landscape and how it's changed in the last few years.

The past few years cryptographic engineers have worked towards safer APIs and primitives. Today, developers have access to a set of tools that are relatively straightforward to use and unlikely to get them in trouble. Latacora likes to call these "Cryptographic Right Answers": they're the things we like to hear when a company describes how their cryptographic designs work.

We're not out of the woods yet: people don't always choose those right answers, and companies are often bound by bad calls they made years ago. This talk walks through some of the common dangerous, discredited or otherwise bad ideas using popular protocols and designs as examples. By learning to recognize problematic patterns, you can make better decisions tomorrow.

Companies who blame employees for poor password and email hygiene aren’t spending enough time, money, or energy driving home security best practices within an organization. We all like to laugh at the "Kanyes” of the world for their poor operational security, instead of aligning our goals to meet theirs.

The role of IT and Security teams in the business world is to provide our employees a safe harbor to make as many mistakes as they can. If we think they’re going to use a simple password, we should ensure their devices and tools not only require stronger passwords, but we supply the tools and training on how to make safe, easier to remember passwords. We have to acknowledge the “desire paths” across the security landscape, and ensure that we not only keep up, but facilitate ease of access while maintaining our security perimeter. At the end of the day, there’s no guarantee on the tech savvy nature or level of care an employee will bring to the table, so we need to move the table closer to them.

Passwords have been the de-facto standard for authentication in the last 40 years, but end users hate them. Not to mention they aren't considered safe anymore - 81% of hacking-related account breaches leveraged weak or stolen passwords. While password + 2FA is a recommended approach by NIST, 2FA may still be hackable. WebAuthn promises a safer, phishing-resistant protocol and easier authentication standard for web applications. But can it live up to it's hype? Join this session to learn about WebAuthn and understand how you can build strong auth with WebAuthn into your applications.

Modern organizations are increasingly required to manage users that are more complex than traditional employees. These non-traditional users might be contractors, temp workers, third-party partners, vendors, or others. IT needs to ensure all these users, many whom IT may not directly own, get proper access to internal resources and applications without increasing the security risks. This might mean proper deprovisioning of a population that is in constant flux or enforcing MFA for users you don’t have control over. Learn how Okta helps with your extended enterprise and hear how Dick’s Sporting Goods manages this problem with Okta.

Global leaders understand that traditional enterprise security is broken. New levels of technology integration and disruptions from Internet of Things (IoT), cloud and mobility are challenging traditional enterprise security and forcing us to think in new ways about identity management. Your IAM projects are becoming more complex and more critical to meeting compliance requirements and protecting your organization from a breach. If your organization is like most, you’ve made IAM investments that address a specific user community, application or business process. With the shortage in IAM expertise and the growing needs of the business, how can you successfully migrate those tactical projects to a strategic IAM program that enables the business and makes you more secure?

2018 was yet another hallmark year of data breaches, and this time with them came along a new slew of consumer privacy problems. Amid the chaos looms a larger set of questions: what is our digital identity? Who is the custodian of that information? And what rights do we, as citizens of the digital globe, have? Companies today have a wealth of knowledge beyond identifying numbers like SSNs or credit card numbers that get at the crux of who we are as individuals, such as biometrics and behavior. So what needs to change when it comes to protecting the privacy of our most precious information – our identities?

Balancing security requirements with a pleasant user experience is an ongoing challenge. As identity-based threats have multiplied over the years, user authentication has become complex, with second factor authentication like One Time Passwords (OTP), re-authentication multiple times a day, and extremely long a1phanUm&r1C passwords. Frustrated users try to minimize their pain by sharing passwords across multiple work and personal accounts, increasing their vulnerability as an unintended side effect. Is it possible, in these high-risk times, to provide a login experience that’s both highly secure and positive for users? Adobe believes this is possible, and we will share our Zero-Trust framework for achieving this balance through “ZEN.”

The ZEN (Zero-Trust Enterprise Network) project from Adobe is an initiative derived from best practices and principles of today’s numerous digital workspaces. With no single off-the-shelf solution to fully deliver on these principles today, ZEN is pioneering technologies and workflows that make the path to a zero-trust network both attainable and efficient.
