Protecting intelligent security operations in dynamic environments
LiveView Technologies (LVT) provides intelligent safety and security solutions with a mission to discover, deter, and defend. They operate innovative, mobile surveillance systems optimized for high-uptime environments such as parking lots and at-risk public areas. However, securely managing identity for employees was a growing challenge. LVT’s previous identity solutions were siloed, difficult to manage, lacked the ability for fine-grained control per application, and presented inefficiencies in provisioning, troubleshooting, and compliance.
As a security-focused company, LVT recognized that robust identity management would be critical for delivering seamless user experiences, maintaining data integrity, and supporting their expanding global customer base. They needed a solution that could reduce manual processes, enforce NIST guidelines, and elevate their overall security posture.
Choosing Okta for scalable, best-in-class Identity and Access Management
LVT evaluated multiple identity providers while searching for a robust and easy-to-configure solution. Having worked with Okta at previous companies with success, James Willmore, information technology infrastructure manager at LVT, says Okta emerged as the clear leader. “I already had a clear understanding of how we could enhance LVT’s IAM program, and Okta made the implementation very easy,” he explains. “They quickly matched me with senior engineers to ensure we implemented best practices from day one.”
Okta’s unified identity platform effortlessly integrated with LVT’s existing human resources system (HRS) and downstream applications to deliver seamless identity orchestration. The engineering team valued Okta’s capabilities — including real-time logging and detailed policies for adaptive authentication — as the best option to take their identity and access management program to the next level. The platform’s ability to simplify governance, automate application provisioning, and provide granular security controls, such as IP-based access restrictions, were also critical decision factors.
Streamlining identity for employees, contractors, and service accounts with Okta
LVT implemented Okta Workforce Identity to streamline how they manage accounts for their 778 employees, contractors, and non-human identities like service accounts. They integrated Okta with their HR system and used Okta Identity Governance (OIG) to automate complex identity processes. This comprehensive framework applies the same level of security and governance to non-human accounts as it does for human users, ensuring all digital identities are trusted and secure.
Through Lifecycle Management, a key OIG capability, LVT automated onboarding and offboarding, reducing provisioning time to hours and enhancing efficiency, allowing the identity team to avoid substantial costs and potential months of manual work. Additionally, this automation ensures employees gain instant access to critical tools like LVT’s learning management system, enabling day-one productivity. "What could have taken months now takes hours, and our users have described the change as transformational,” Willmore says.
OIG also helped LVT implement zero standing privileges (ZSP) through automated, granular access requests, meaning users only have the access they need, precisely when they need it. Users can request access directly within Okta, and customized Workflows then facilitate the necessary approvals before automatically provisioning that access. With this system in place, LVT eliminated 30% of IT tickets related to access requests, allowing the team to focus on long-term goals instead of day-to-day troubleshooting.
Meanwhile, OIG helps with software license management by automatically deprovisioning unused application licenses, saving the company over $500,000 annually. Additionally, through its access request process, LVT works to prevent SaaS sprawl by identifying and redirecting requests for duplicative tools to existing, approved applications, avoiding an additional estimated $500,000 to $1 million. Finally, the team also conducts periodic automated reviews using Access Certifications via OIG to ensure only authorized users retain access to applications, which significantly bolsters compliance and reduces audit fatigue. As Willmore says, “Processes that used to take multiple people months to complete now run on autopilot — all with no extra effort from me or my team.”
