Today, we’re excited to announce the limited availability of Okta Digital ID Verification Beta, a new capability to help organizations verify government-issued verifiable digital credentials (VDCs). Learn how to participate in the beta or continue reading for more.
The Okta Digital ID Verification Beta is specifically designed for non-production and test environments, offering developers a chance to explore a variety of capabilities:
- Supported IDs: The beta currently supports US mobile driver’s licenses (mDLs), with future plans to expand to Google ID Pass, Apple Digital ID, and EU PIDs (EU PIDs - European Union Personal Identification Documents).
- Flexible verification moments (transactional & ad hoc flows): This functionality operates independently of existing Okta and Auth0 products, supporting "transactional" or "ad hoc" verification checks within an application, such as:
- Age gating: Instantly verify a user's age for access to age-restricted content or purchases.
- Step-up authentication: Perform enhanced identity checks before authorizing sensitive actions.
- Data minimization (progressive profiling): Request and verify specific user attributes only when they are required.
- Optimized for developers: Participants will receive access to a dedicated admin dashboard and specific APIs/SDKs for the Verified Digital Credential (VDC) product, enabling rapid building and testing.
Why we’re investing in VDCs
Digital identity is evolving quickly. Verifiable digital credentials (VDCs) are gaining momentum worldwide: from governments actively testing, piloting, and mandating mobile driver’s license (mDL) deployments, to wallet-based credentials and emerging national eID programs. At the same time, the devices and platforms people already use are becoming the natural home for these credentials, making these digital ID experiences more accessible, more convenient. More likely adoption will accelerate.
As adoption grows, verification becomes a core product capability, not just a compliance checkbox. Customers expect experiences that are fast and intuitive, and regulators and businesses expect stronger signals of trust. For developers, the landscape can be fragmented across formats, interoperability expectations, and user experience patterns. The challenge is delivering verification that’s both high-trust and privacy-forward, without adding complexity for builders.
How Okta’s looking ahead
Okta’s perspective is that verification — across credentials and ecosystems — should be developer-friendly and flexible, designed to fit into the moments where trust needs to be established (for example, age checks, verification before sensitive actions, or progressive profiling). And it should complement your existing architecture, extending the Okta identity stack with verifiable credential experiences you can embed directly into your applications.
Over time, this can help organizations reuse trusted VDCs across interactions — improving user experience, reducing friction, and helping lower verification costs, while supporting privacy-forward patterns. Our approach is standards-aligned and modular: starting with acceptance of government-issued digital IDs and expanding to support business-issued credentials.
What’s supported
In the immediate future, the Okta Digital ID Verification Beta will allow organizations to verify government-issued digital IDs (such as mobile driver’s licenses and emerging national eIDs), enabling lower-friction, higher-trust user flows at a lower cost than traditional document-based identity proofing.
Looking ahead, Okta’s VDC Platform will provide the infrastructure for issuing, verifying, and reusing verifiable credentials across users, devices, and applications. It will offer end-to-end capabilities built directly into Okta and Auth0, along with developer APIs and SDKs for credential issuance, verification, and wallet operations.
How to participate in the beta
To join the Okta Digital ID Verification Beta, fill out this short form to let us know you’re interested. If it’s a good fit, we’ll help you configure VDCs and integrate using our VDC-specific SDKs. Ideal participants:
- Are Okta or Auth0 customers with a strong transactional/ad hoc government ID verification use case
- Able to commit engineering time to build an end-to-end demo
- Willing to join regular check-ins (weekly or bi-weekly) and share feedback
- Can test in a US-only, non-production environment
We’re excited to partner with early builders to shape the future of VDCs. Your feedback will directly influence the product experience over the next 12 months and what we bring to Early Access afterward.
