How the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services Will Use Okta to Modernize its Identity Infrastructure

Today we’re excited to announce that the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) has selected Okta to improve the security, reliability, scalability and user experience for its Quality Payments Program (QPP).

We’re proud to already provide our HIPAA compliant-solutions to healthcare organizations. As we pursue our FedRAMP authorization under the sponsorship of the Department of Justice, we look forward to working with more organizations with important and pressing needs, and the potential for massive impact. Approximately one in every three Americans is enrolled in a CMS program — and by enabling the adoption of best-of-breed technology, we’re helping the agency fulfill its mission to strengthen and modernize the nation's healthcare system while providing quality care at lower cost.

CMS is leading the charge of forward-thinking government entities and we’re thrilled the agency has chosen Okta to provide identity solutions that fit its scale, reliability and regulatory needs. We plan to address several pain points for CMS’ Commercial off the Shelf (COTS) identity and access control system to greatly improve the end user experience and security in these key areas:

  • Scalability: Our cloud-based architecture will help CMS accommodate its millions of users and scale up during peak periods.

  • Security: We will enable CMS to securely control user access to the QPP website and other services, quickly provision and deprovision users, enable multifactor authentication and mitigate unauthorized access.

  • Agility: With Okta, CMS IT architecture will be more agile, allowing for much faster deployment of applications, services and new functionalities, removing the need for patching, maintenance and upgrades.

  • User experience: We will improve the user experience for system administrators, employees and customers by upgrading CMS’ user interface and enabling self-service features such as automated password reset.

Frederic Kerrest is the Executive Vice Chairman, COO, and co-founder of Okta. He’s responsible for our day-to-day operations, working with employees, partners and customers to deliver on the company’s mission of leveraging technology to make companies more productive and secure.

Prior to Okta, Frederic worked at Hummer Winblad Venture Partners. He also started and built the Latin America sales organization at Salesforce.com. Frederic currently serves as a mentor at the MIT Trust Center for Entrepreneurship and the Stanford StartX Accelerator program and a member of the Board of Trustees of The Ocean School in Los Angeles, CA.
