Job Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Lead API Design and Governance: Serve as the Subject Matter Expert (SME) in API integration design. Review, govern, and approve third-party Independent Software Vendor (ISV) APIs, ensuring visual and functional integration components align with critical business use cases.
  • Enforce Best Practices: Ensure all integration solutions adhere strictly to Okta’s best practices, including requirements for security, scalability, performance, and resilience. Drive the adoption of advanced patterns for complex enterprise integration scenarios (REST, SOAP, GraphQL).
  • Architecture & Feasibility: Conduct comprehensive technical deep dives and feasibility assessments for complex enterprise API integrations, identifying potential roadblocks, performance bottlenecks, and resource requirements early in the development lifecycle.
  • Process Optimization: Proactively collaborate with Product Management, Engineering, and Leadership to conceptualize, design, and implement sustainable, efficient, and standardized integration processes and tooling.
  • Mentorship and Documentation: Act as a technical resource and mentor for junior team members. Collaborate closely with technical writers to produce high-quality, comprehensive, and clear customer-facing and developer-facing documentation and internal training materials.

Required Knowledge, Skills, And Abilities:

  • Experience: 3+ years of progressive experience in API integration, focusing on designing, implementing, and debugging solutions using modern API technologies (REST, SOAP, GraphQL).
  • Integration Design Expertise: Proven experience providing design ownership and direction for visual and data-centric integration components.
  • Deep Technical Understanding: Strong, fundamental understanding of server-side programming principles (APIs, HTTP, Database systems, Caching, Webhooks, Cryptography, Rate Limiting, Authentication & Authorization).
  • API Security: Advanced knowledge of factors affecting API security, common attack vectors, and best practices for secure integration design.
  • Problem Solving: Exceptional troubleshooting and problem-solving skills with a demonstrated ability to address root causes, often looking beyond immediate symptoms to diagnose underlying systemic issues.
  • Documentation & Review: Demonstrated ability to critically review, interpret, and evaluate complex third-party API documentation to determine the most viable and efficient integration patterns.
  • Communication & Collaboration: Excellent verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to articulate complex technical concepts to both technical and non-technical stakeholders.
  • Proactive Teamwork: Highly collaborative, capable of taking initiative, leading discussions, and driving tasks to completion while fostering a positive team environment.

Nice to Have:

  • Coding Proficiency: 1+ years of professional coding experience in languages such as JavaScript, Python, Java, or C#.
  • Identity & Access Management (IAM): Strong knowledge of authentication and authorization protocols and frameworks (i.e. OAuth 2.0/SAML, OpenID Connect/JWT).
  • Security Concepts: Practical knowledge of secure authentication concepts such as SSO, federated identity management, multi-factor authentication (MFA), and digital certificates.
  • Software Design: Solid understanding of software engineering principles and design patterns (i.e., data structures, algorithms, and modular component design).
  • Reusable Components: Prior experience developing and maintaining reusable software components, SDKs, or connector frameworks leveraged by other developers and business users.

Education and Training:

  • Bachelor’s Degree, preferably in Computer Science, Engineering, or a related technical area
