A significant career change is rarely a solo journey. It requires a powerful combination of self-belief, hard work, and a dedicated support system. For Helen Chen, now a Principal Software Engineer at Okta, allyship was the cornerstone of her transition from the retail industry into a thriving tech career. She shares her story and the impact that a network of support—from family to colleagues—can have on a transformative journey.

What made you decide to become a software engineer?

My husband, who is a software developer himself, was my first ally. He helped me recognize that I have the interest and capability to be a software developer, seeing a potential in me that I couldn’t see in myself. He recognized my innate interest in algorithms and the development of tools from what I said were the most enjoyable parts of my job: nerding out in Excel and creating reusable templates.

The turning point came while I was working as an inventory planner at Old Navy. I had to do a really manual task that I felt could be automated. My husband encouraged me to learn the programming language VBA and make it a reality. I had so much fun writing that script and found it so rewarding that I finally decided to switch fields. It was a very scary decision, especially since I was a new mother to a then-eight-month-old baby, but his unwavering support helped me overcome my hesitation.

My support system was essential. I believe that to become good at something, you have to build a strong foundation, so I left my job and went back to college full-time at the University of San Francisco to earn a second bachelor’s degree in computer science. This transition wouldn't have been possible without my family.

My husband championed my new career path by being a true parenting partner, sharing all the daily duties of drop-offs, pick-ups, and meal prep so I had dedicated time to learn. At the same time, my parents and in-laws provided crucial childcare support, which allowed me to finish my degree efficiently and manage the guilt of leaving my very young son to focus on my classes. Their combined support created the foundation upon which I could build my new career.

The next obstacle was getting hired. Here again, community support was key. An alumnus of USF shared an internship posting for Okta with the computer science department student list. My resume was picked by a recruiter, and I got the chance to interview. I passed and joined Okta as a Software Engineering intern. After a fun and educational summer with amazing mentors and co-workers, I was given a return offer as a Software Engineer. I have been at Okta ever since!

You’ve had an incredible trajectory, from intern to Principal Software Engineer. How did Okta’s culture of support contribute to that growth?

My growth at Okta is a direct reflection of the supportive environment here. It started during my internship with amazing mentors who invested in my success. As a full-time engineer, that support continued and expanded. My managers consistently provided me with opportunities to tackle complex projects and expand my skills, trusting me with increasing responsibility.

There's a strong culture of mentorship and knowledge-sharing; I've never hesitated to ask questions because my colleagues are always willing to help. This collaborative spirit, combined with clear pathways for advancement, made it possible for me to progress from an entry-level role to a Principal Engineer. Okta doesn't just hire you for a job; they invest in your entire career, and that support has been fundamental to my success.

What advice would you give to others looking to make a major career change?

First, listen to the allies in your life — the people who see your potential even when you don’t. Second, don't be afraid to build a new foundation; the investment in learning is worth it. Finally, and most importantly, seek out environments that prioritize mentorship and support. A great company and a great team will not only welcome you but will actively invest in your growth. Your unique journey is a strength, so find a place that recognizes and nurtures that.
