We live in a world where AI is rapidly changing how we work and interact with technology. But what does that mean for identity and how we secure it? Arnab Bose, the Chief Product Officer of Okta Platform, shared his take on the Software Snack Bites podcast with host Shomik Ghosh of Boldstart Ventures.
Here’s a look at highlights from their conversation. Watch the video to catch the full episode.
AI exacerbates existing security challenges
Sophisticated audio and video deepfakes, enabled by AI, are on the rise. Deepfake attacks can be used to target help desks or to impersonate job applicants, making it crucial for organizations to implement advanced identity verification. These attacks are particularly concerning for industries that deal with sensitive information, such as the fintech sector, which saw a 700% increase in deepfake incidents in 2023.
AI agents introduce a new frontier for identity
As AI agents become more prevalent and autonomous, they introduce new security challenges. And while protocols like Model Context Protocol (MCP) can help connect AI agents with tools and resources, OAuth and similar frameworks must be baked in from the beginning to secure those connections. The next evolution of security for AI agents should include a cross-app authorization grant that will give enterprise organziations better visibility and control over how AI agents access and interact with corporate data, treating them with the same stringent security measures as human users.
Security can enhance the user experience
It's a common misconception that more security means more friction. But innovations like Okta FastPass, a passwordless, phishing-resistant authenticator, demonstrate otherwise. Not only is FastPass more secure than traditional methods, it's also faster for users to log in. Solutions like passwordless authentication prove that stronger security doesn't have to come at the cost of usability.
The critical role of identity security
Identity security remains foundational for securing enterprise technology. A breach in identity can disrupt entire organizations, making it critical to protect these systems. As AI agents play an expanded role in today’s workforce, securing non-human identities, especially AI agents, is quickly emerging as a top priority for security and IT leaders.
