There is a common misconception that an engineer’s value is measured solely by the elegance of their code. But after 20 years in this industry—ten of them here at Okta and Auth0—I’ve learned that the most powerful tool in a developer's kit isn't a specific language or framework. It’s a product mindset.

My journey at Okta hasn't been a straight line up the technical ladder. It’s been a deliberate exploration of how technology serves people, and that "career lattice" has made all the difference.

The Power of the Internal Pivot

Earlier in my tenure, I made a choice that some found surprising: I stepped away from pure engineering to become a Product Manager.

I spent several years defining the "what" and the "why" behind our tools. This period was transformative. It taught me to look at a problem and ask, "What is the minimum viable solution that delivers the maximum value to the customer?" When I eventually returned to my true passion as an Individual Contributor (IC) in engineering, I wasn't the same developer. I no longer just built what was on the ticket; I built with an understanding of the customer's pain points, the business goals, and the long-term roadmap.

Innovation in "Startup Mode"

Today, I apply that mindset to our AI Ecosystems team. We combine high-velocity execution with the stability and massive scale of Okta.

We are currently tackling two major frontiers:

  1. Vercel Integration: We’re ensuring that developers can secure their AI-driven applications instantly, removing friction so they can focus on innovation.
  2. The Developer Portal: We’re building a "front door" for APIs, allowing our customers to share their services securely and professionally with the world.

Because of my background in product, I don’t just see these as technical tasks. I see them as ways to empower the global developer community.

Why Tenure is a Competitive Advantage

One of the most unique aspects of Okta is what I call the "Long-Timer" advantage. In many companies, the "tribal knowledge" disappears every two years. Here, the people who built the foundation are still in the room.

When I’m stuck on a complex architectural problem, I can reach out to colleagues who have been here for a decade. This collective wisdom allows us to move faster and avoid the pitfalls of the past. It creates an environment where we aren't just shipping code—we’re building a legacy of security.

A Message to the "Curious" Engineer

If you’re an engineer who finds yourself asking "Why are we building this?" or "How does this help the user?", you belong at Okta. We don't just value your ability to solve a bug; we value your perspective on the whole product.

Okta is a place where you can be an engineer, a product thinker, a mentor, and a leader—all in one career.
