Accelerate your career by joining Okta as a member of our Product Legal Team! As Corporate Counsel, Data you’ll be helping to build a scalable global data security and usage practice as part of the Product Legal function and providing frontline counseling in support of Okta’s global product and engineering efforts. 

Characteristics and Skills:

To succeed in this role, you will need to use excellent business judgment and critical thinking to provide pragmatic and effective legal solutions aligned with business objectives while mitigating legal risks. To be successful in our remote or hybrid work environment, you should be able to work independently as well as collaboratively in view of evolving business conditions and goals. You will work closely with key internal business and technology partners on various strategic and tactical legal matters relating to the development and implementation of Okta’s data protection strategies. You will support the introduction of data collection and telemetry in new and existing Okta solutions in view of data compliance and regulatory requirements and data usage policies.

Responsibilities:

  • Counsel and work closely with Okta’s Product Management and Engineering teams through all stages of software product and cloud service life cycles to support development, readiness and release by reviewing and issue spotting on a wide range of issues related to use and control of customer data including data protection & security, marketing use cases, competition, and AI/ML
  • Work within the Product Legal team and in close collaboration with the Privacy and Cybersecurity Legal teams. 
  • Develop strong and collaborative relationships with cross-functional partners across Okta to effectively deliver on complex projects
  • Support M&A activities, including diligence and integration
  • Perform due diligence to ensure Okta’s compliance with third-party agreements, security attestations, data protection policies, and government regulations and certifications
  • Help develop, document, and socialize scalable and repeatable policies, practices and procedures for internal clients to access legal support related to data protection and usage
  • Map, document, and enforce data collection and telemetry policies and plans to help ensure consistent and compliant data usage in product development and customer analysis

Required Skills and Experience: 

  • 4+ years of law firm and/or in-house experience, including at least 1-2 years working on relevant product matters, preferably with some experience at a software/SaaS company
  • Strong understanding of cloud service offerings, including managed service offerings and multi-tenant SaaS architecture 
  • Ability to understand technical lingo and concepts as well as fluency in software development methods and related business models 
  • Expertise in data/information security, along with a strong awareness of data privacy issues and laws  
  • Sound and practical legal and business judgment, as well as the ability to think strategically and develop strong working relationships with key internal clients
  • Wide and general knowledge of global laws that can affect data protection and usage standards
  • Self-motivation to take the initiative and dig in to understand and independently advise on issues related to product counseling of first impression
  • Experience drafting and implementing company wide policies preferred
  • Team oriented with a sense of humor 
  • Strong academic background and a licensed lawyer in good standing in the jurisdiction where you work and reside
  • Work experience or a degree in engineering or computer science would be highly beneficial
